However, the 48-year-old didn't expect to be lining up beside them. Dusty and sons Isaiah, 21, and Sebastian, 20, started for Wanderers' third grade in a 31-0 shut out of University last Saturday.
Dusty played No.8 and the two boys in the halves.
"It was awesome," said Kavanagh, who started playing rugby at 35. "We did a few joint tackles. It helps when your son is the halfback, he has to pass you the ball."
Isaiah has played with Merewether since he was 10. Sebastian is a Wanderers junior.
"They played against each other in a colts grand final a couple of years ago but had never played together," Kavanagh said. "It was Isaiah's idea for the three of us to have a run. He is going to Europe in a few weeks and wanted to play with his brother and his dad before he went. To have us appear in the program wearing jumpers eight, nine and 10 was pretty cool. I've been dropped to the bench this week and after that I might pull the pin."
