Resource recovery involves separating valuable materials such as metals and concrete that might end up in landfill from non-recyclable waste. The resource recovery facilities are able to gain value for those materials and in turn can pass on some of this benefit by way of lower gate rates offered to customers.
"Recycling can improve a business's bottom line by saving on the rate per tonne paid for disposal," Mick Rogers, co-owner and director of Central Waste Station at Kurri Kurri said. "Most landfills advertise their tipping rates so it is a simple matter for a business to compare the cost of disposal to landfill compared to at a local resource recovery facility."
By using a waste recovery facility, business owners can feel good in the knowledge that their company is following sound environmental principals and reducing their effective global impact.
"Many builders and developers have an interest in ensuring the sustainable management of their waste materials," co-owner and director Kevin Daly said.
"In fact many leading builders aspire to receive the Green Star Certification that is issued by the Green Building Council of Australia.
"Part of the assessment criteria for this certification is the sustainable management of waste materials.
"Central Waste Station offers full waste reporting as a complimentary service to its skip bin customers. This provides a full accounting of recovery rates by waste type.
"Waste disposed at a resource recovery facility should actually cost less than waste disposed of at a landfill, so this practice is both environmentally and financially beneficial."
A waste recovery facility can also save time as many are located more conveniently than landfills.
Central Waste Station has invested heavily in and operates a state-of-the-art resource recovery plant at its Kurri Kurri facility. This plant delivers an exceptionally high recovery rate ensuring maximum benefit from materials recovered.
"Such benefits offset disposal costs of non-recyclable waste and allows the company to save on disposal and pass those savings onto customers," Mick said.
