Eira Chidgey is showing her first solo exhibition in Australia at Timeless Textiles. Born, raised and educated in England, Chidgey moved to Australia with her young family five years ago. Go Your Own Way delves into the artist's psyche as she searches for her own direction, influenced by a new country and motherhood. Using a variety of textile processes including patchwork, hand and machine stitching, Chidgey's has created large-scale abstract canvases tell her story. Timeless Textiles, 90 Hunter St, Newcastle.
The new exhibition at Blackstone Gallery opens on Saturday May, 18 from 3pm. New works by Maitland-based, Dutch-born artist, Patricia Van Lubeck, take inspiration from the environment around her. She likes to play with perspective, repetition and colour to create detailed oil paintings and ink drawings. Blackstone Gallery, 470 Hunter St, Newcastle.
Also opening Saturday May, 18 is Patrick Mavety at The Creator Incubator. From 6-8pm, his solo exhibition 'Brio' will open to the public, presenting a range of night and day landscape paintings. Saturday, May 18, is the last day at University of Newcastle Gallery for the PhD exhibition by Kathryn Jeanes. An intense exhibition experience that delves deep into the local histories and institutionalised abuse of "wayward" working class girls. Through artist books, text and installation Jeanes communicates the horrific trauma these girls endured. University of Newcastle Gallery is located at the Callaghan Campus, Shortland.
