SECOND PLACE FOR 15s Boys HOCKEY
NEWCASTLE'S under-15 division one boys hockey side almost won the association two state titles in as many weeks at the weekend.
The side were narrowly defeated by Illawarra 2-1 in their final of the Under 15 Boys Field State Championships at Macarthur Hockey Centre on Sunday.
They had won every match over the three-day tournament up until the final, recording victories over Parkes (4-1), Central Coast (7-2), Sydney South (4-0) and Tamworth (8-1) in the pool matches, before cruising past Metro South West (3-0) in the semi-final.
Newcastle's second side, which played in division three, lost 5-3 to Northern Sydney & Beaches in the final after a handy campaign.
Meanwhile, the NSW Combined High Schools under-16 boys squad was announced last week. Beau Crockett, of Whitebridge High School, and Ryan Wollnough, of Merewether High School, were selected.
Ten Newcastle boys have also been named in the 2019-20 Hockey NSW Athlete Acceleration Program squad.
