A MAN whose body was found in the water at a wharf in Newcastle has now been identified, police say.

About 8.20am on Saturday, May 25, a man's body was found in the water behind a hotel on Wharf Road.
While police were initially unable to identify the man, late on Monday police confirmed the body had been formally identified.

On Saturday, police said it was believed the body had been in the water "for a short time".
"There is nothing at this stage to suggest the man's death is suspicious," police said.
Police thanked members of the public and the media for their assistance.
