One of two playgrounds on the City of Newcastle's 2018/19 renewal schedule opened on Monday, test-driven by a select group of Wallsend South Public School students.

The Cressington Way facilities, which Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes says cost around $150,000, include a timber and steel-structured playground with tepee tower, stainless steel slide and a shop counter.
The latest opening follows four other City rejuvenation projects completed in 2018, three in 2017 and five in 2016, totally $5 million in works across 11 suburbs.
"Under this annual renewal scheme, the City's Parks and Projects teams completely overhaul old, weathered equipment, replacing them with more modern materials that meet ever-rising standards and service expectations," Cr Nelmes said.
"We've also just recently celebrated the opening of the South Stockton Active Hub along the Stockton foreshore, and an adventure playground at Richley Reserve."
The second playground listed on the City's books for renewal in 2019 was Fletcher Street Reserve at Adamstown. The proposed design includes an extra wide stainless steel slide, clock, musical chimes, mountain ramp, rope net climber, hammock swing and double swing.
