And there was plenty to love when they found a three-bedroom 1920s home with a bathroom "literally in the hallway" in Mayfield around four years ago.
"We love the fact it is an old house," Heidi told Domain of their home at 2 Woodstock Street.
"The high ceilings, beautiful woodwork, the leadlighting; all of those things you just don't really get in a new property.
"We both like bringing back those old properties and making them a bit more family friendly for the next era. We've done a few now and we do really enjoy it."
Being a level block was also appealing, as was the location. When returning to Newcastle, they weren't tied to any particular area and have enjoyed their time in a suburb popular with families.

"It's been really lovely living here," Heidi said. "The house has a really lovely feel. We have good neighbours, a good coffee shop on the corner and it is a really fabulous area to be in."
The couple took their time renovating and extending. They worked with the original features and added a fresh Hamptons look throughout with white interiors complementing beautiful timber floors.

"We pretty much just opened up the back and redid everything," Heidi said. "We did a new bathroom, new kitchen, opened up and put a new room on the back and changed it from a three-bedroom house into a four-bedroom house with two living areas.
"It's very white and light and fresh and we really tried to make it flexible. We've got two small kids, so three bedrooms and a study works well for us. But if someone else came in and needs something different they could change it around really easily and make it suit what their family needs."
There is a formal lounge with an original fireplace and informal living that extends to a rear covered timber deck overlooking the family friendly yard. The new bathroom has floor-to-ceiling tiles and a freestanding bath.
The home has been listed for sale through Tony Tolazzi, of Raine & Horne Mayfield. Its first open is June 15 at 12.30pm. A price guide has not yet been set.
