Newcastle has a vibrant arts scene, and as revitalisation of the CBD attracts more visitors to the city, local artists are gaining greater exposure.
Local art galleries like Watt Space and cstudios Art Gallery play an important role in providing a platform to showcase their work.
"Newcastle is fast becoming known with many tourists stopping and paying attention to our talented artists who will continue to and will always be vigilant in their art practice," Joanne Chisholm-Ray, manager and curator of cstudios Art Gallery, said.
"I see my role is to give opportunity to our numerous local talented artists."
Established in 2013, cstudios Art Gallery, is located on the ground floor of the Bellevue apartments on Hunter Street West and is launching an sculpture and photographic exhibition this afternoon (June 8) from 4pm to 6pm.
"Well-known sculptors including Roger McFarlane, Mick Goodyer, Mark Aylward Peter Simmons, Bridget Whitehead and Marika Osmotherly will exhibit along with some of the many local talented photographers including Ros Elkin, Leisa Davis, Meredith Ford, Greg Meyer, Joerg Lehmann and Stuart Marlin," Joanne said.
Contemporary and dynamic, Watt Space operates in the University's Newcastle City precinct in an award winning re-purposed civic building, Northumberland House.
Its heritage facade opens to industrial-style galleries within, designed by UON alumnus Andrew Donaldson.
"There is a real vibrancy around Newcastle's art scene this year and we are celebrating the amazing talent we have in this city," curator Gillean Shaw said.
"We are seeing some beautiful major exhibitions across all our gallery spaces that have national attention, and really position Newcastle as being a place to watch and admire."
In May this year, Watt Space hosted the Head On Photo Festival 2019 which featured artist Dr Ella Dreyfus, Senior Lecturer, Head of Public Programs, National Art School, exhibiting Under Twenty-Seven.
Currently on display until June 30 is Brain @ Watt Space, an interactive and dynamic exhibition exploring the brain.
