The Bulahdelah local has been awarded an OAM for service to the agricultural show sector.
His long list of achievements include serving as president of the Bulahdelah Show Society since 1984, chairman of the Hunter Group of Shows and director of the Agricultural Society of NSW for 14 years.
"You get into these positions and you don't get out of them," Mr Gooch said.
"I was surprised to get the letter. I still don't know who nominated me."
Mr Gooch's love of the show industry goes back to his family's involvement in show jumping in the 1950s and 60s.
