Now the man known as Dutchy is set to be given the job of guiding Australia's next generation to FIFA Under-20 World Cup qualification.
Van Egmond, who is an assistant coach with the Matildas at the women's World Cup in France, is reportedly in advanced talks to take the reins of the Young Socceroos.
The Young Socceroos position has been vacant since Ante Milicic took on the Matildas in February, and FFA is keen to fill it before the start of a new Under-20 World Cup cycle, after the team last year failed to qualify for the 2019 tournament in Poland.
Van Egmond, 53, is no stranger to youth football.
After guiding the Jets to the 2008 A-League championship, he spent three years at the helm of the Australian Institute of Sport soccer program and was the inaugural director of the Emerging Jets program.
As well as act as an assistant at the Matildas, for whom his daughter Emily is a senior player, van Egmond is in charge of the Young Matildas and this year oversaw a successful AFC U-19 Women's Championship qualification phase in Myanmar.
Apart from a strong resume, van Egmond has a good relationship with Socceroos coach Graham Arnold.
