The equipment, to be installed by end of of the year, will bring the airport up-to-date with new mandatory aviation security screening requirements.

"We're thrilled to be one of the first airports to install this world-leading system and make the security screening process faster and easier," Airport CEO Peter Cock said.

"This new equipment will include scanners capable of identifying suspicious objects of any material type."

Once in use, passengers will no longer be required to undergo random explosives detection testing and will not have to remove electronic devices, aerosols and liquids from their hand luggage.

Rapiscan Systems won the tender to supply and install this new security screening equipment.

"The combined technologies create a better experience for passengers while improving Newcastle airport's security outcomes and strengthening overall aviation security," Rapiscan Systems president, Mal Maginnis said.
