LET'S go back to the 1950s. No drugs, no home invasions, no attacks on police, ambulance officers and medical workers, kids respected their elders. I know I'm dreaming, but I'm not the only one.

KATHLEEN Wild's doctoral field is unclear to me (Short Takes, 19/6). However, her reference to "global warming of 1.5 degrees Celsius" makes no sense. 1.5 degrees C is a specific temperature. Difference (rises or falls) in temperature are measured in Celsius degrees, not degrees Celsius. It's not mere semantics.

TO stimulate the economy, they should be giving all the unemployed and pensioners thousands of dollars because we all know that they will spend every cent.

GRANT Conway (Short Takes, 19/6) asked whether politicians have to accept their salary increase and suggests that it would be a good look to turn it down, with so many others struggling financially. Actually, they don't have to accept a pay rise and neither do we. However as an aged pensioner, I'm not really in a position to knock back my occasional increase just yet. Perhaps though, Mr Conway might share with us, the satisfaction he felt on the last occasion he proudly rejected a little extra in his own pay packet.

IN reply to George Paris (Short Takes, 15/6), he should know that the ABC is required by charter to be balanced and unbiased. I believe Fairfax Media and The Guardian are already "socially-biased" to the left on most issues. We don't need the publicly-funded ABC to supply more political bias. There is not a bonus of no ads on the ABC. ABC TV already bores us with self-promotional program ads for several minutes between programs. Those promos tend to be very funereal in nature.

SO the "death" of the CBD is all down to Newcastle Now, nothing to do with the light rail and Supercars ('Newcastle Now didn't deliver for the city', Opinion 20/6)?

I WISH to know firstly, who is the person who is said to have heard Mr. Setka's statements on Rosie Batty ('CFMMEU heavyweights back Setka, strongly deny Batty criticism', SMH 20/6)? As it stands he denies he criticised Ms Batty and I am led to believe other members of union deny he did so (The Australian, 14/6). I believe it has now become a case of he-said they (being the press) said. To my mind, no real evidence has been put forward other than claims it happened. Where's the proof? We have footballers and others who all seem to be guilty according to the press with no court case being completed. I and many others always believed you were innocent until proven guilty. To make a point, if a person were hypothetically to come forward and say the Prime Minister assaulted them at school 30 years ago, would they arrest and persecute him as they have done to many others?
