According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Newcastle and Lake Macquarie are in for a wet week.
"Over the next few days we have a marine wind warning due to a southerly wind surge," meteorologist Anita Pyne said.
"Showers will stay mostly around the coastal fringe from Newcastle to Taree on Saturday.
"They will be moving further into the middle of the Hunter on Sunday."
This weather pattern is expected to continue through to mid-week due to a high-pressure system off the south east of the country.
With moisture being blown in from the ocean, there is a chance of snow at Barrington Tops.

"There will certainly be a lot of frost and temperatures will be pretty damn cold," Ms Pyne said.
"It is by no means promised, but there is a chance of the white stuff into Sunday and Monday."
Temperatures are forecast to drop to seven degrees Celsius overnight in Newcastle on the weekend, four degrees in Wallsend, three in Maitland and Toronto and below zero in the Upper Hunter.
