WHY is it that cabbies and other drivers face being booked for stopping in Hunter Street while the council's garbage truck driver stops his council-owned vehicle outside the council's Civic Theatre with impunity to empty the council's rubbish bins? It is still a no-stopping zone and it still holds up traffic, and yet it happens regularly. Is there one rule for the council and another for the rest of us? Apparently.

REGARDING elderly deaths in group homes or allegedly preventable deaths in proper disability centres ('Former Stockton Centre residents still dying in group homes', Newcastle Herald 24/6): people are calling out for help for the elderly and the disabled. Wake up to yourself, our so-called government. I believe Family and Community Services plus the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission don't care, they're already in enough trouble. Keep the elderly and disabled centres open for them to get the treatment they need. It scares me, because one day I may need a centre with people to care for me. Nice places to sell, with both Stockton and Nelson Bay's centres on the beach. It makes you wonder what our fantastic government might really be up to.

AFTER trying to call my 83-year-old mother, I went around to find that her landline phone was not working. After spending an hour with Telstra and turning off and on switches, we find that her NBN is faulty and the earliest time a technician could come was four days hence. No elderly person should be without a phone, and I am not sure her vital call will work without a phone line, but here what gets me: they could send out a technician on Saturday, but she would have had to pay a fee. Why can't Telstra send them out for free? It is not my mother's fault.

LET'S face it, John Lehman (Short Takes, 25/6), our national anthem is an embarrassing relic of our early colonial days that just sounds ridiculous when sung. What key is it in again? The key of pompous antiquated Anglo imperialism.

GRAEME Kime (Letters, 20/6): no-one is condoning drug use. If it means we have the ability to keep kids safe let's use it. As a teacher and mother. I hope that I never have to explain to my kids their friend died because old people were scared of technology.

MAYBE the farmer on page seven of Monday's edition of the Herald ('Farm's growing problems', Herald 24/6) should speak to Tim Roberts on page 11 ('Desertification a worldwide problem', Opinion 24/6).

Also, John Cooper (Letters, 24/6), I remember the ad where the last line was "it's more than a game". Loved that ad!
