Shoppers and passersby were shocked to see the sign near the Pearson Street entrance light up like a candle.
Emergency services were called about midday on Tuesday, with units from Charlestown and a special ladder unit from Newcastle attending the small blaze.
After assessing the fire atop the sign, the carpark entrance and street were shut to traffic so that crews could ensure water reached the tip of the display board.
"We isolated power, responded quickly and extinguished it," a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said.
"We believe it was caused by an electrical problem."
By 1pm the site was declared safe.
