On Tuesday a gold Nissan Patrol, that had been stolen from a Wallsend property earlier in the month, was involved in a collision with a Toyota Prado and a fence on Lewis Street.
Following the crash the two male occupants of the Nissan ran from the scene. The passenger, a 19-year-old man, was chased by members of the public, tackled and detained until police arrived at the scene.
Police arrested the man and he was taken to Waratah police station for questioning. The teenager, who is currently on parole, was charged with being carried in conveyance without consent and trespass.
He was refused bail by police to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Wednesday.
