WITH one large car dealership taking over another ('Car deal's rough road', Newcastle Herald 28/6), I fear this will create a monopoly in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley and the possibility of increasing car prices. To overcome this, all buyers will have to do is a short trip down to the Central Coast or a little further to Sydney, where the competition in selling vehicles remains ferocious

JOHN Keen (Short Takes, 1/7), try thinking a little deeper. Newcastle council stood idly by while Macquarie Street and Keolis Downer blocked Hunter Street with a silly tramway. It has inconvenienced everybody who wants to use the carriageway for its intended purpose. The council has options that would make its operation compliant with relevant laws. It could wheel the theatre's bins in a different direction and empty them into a truck in Christie Street, or even King Street without delaying traffic. The council knows it is illegal to stop a vehicle near its theatre in Hunter Street. My point is that this is a further indication that thinking and planning are not council strong points. Anyone else would be forced to make a change.

SPINACH has been known world-wide as a muscle stimulant (Odd Spot, 1/7). Popeye the Sailor was telling the world back in 1929. We're just catching up!

THE Kimberly Clark decision ('Kimberly-Clark cleared over 'flushable' wipe claims', AFR 28/1) has just cemented my belief that the courts are on the side of big business even if it poisons the planet.

NICE to see the Broncos, complete with the one-eyed referee, turn up with dubious Darius ('Mann's heartbreak before starring role', Newcastle Herald 1/7). In my opinion the biased refereeing was almost criminal and it is no wonder that fans in general are starting to go elsewhere. When is the NRL going to sort out the showpony referees?

JOHN Arnold (Short Takes, 29/6), death threats are a serious threat to freedom of speech. Many Christians, not just Father Rod Bower, have received them, and I wouldn't bet that none have been from atheists. Father Bower and Israel Folau are both Christians who have notoriety for their religious messages, but only one has lost his job as a consequence. For many of us that's also a serious threat to freedom of speech.

SYDNEY has introduced water restrictions ('Sydney water restrictions take effect after 'extreme' drop in dam levels', SBS 1/6), not surprising owing to the severity of the drought. If the drought continues, it won't be long before the wider Hunter follows. Then again, I've often wondered, how desert countries like Saudi Arabia have no water restrictions at all?
