Emergency services were called to Macquarie Street/Brooks Parade about 12.30am to reports of a weatherboard house on fire.
"I woke up to the noise outside my bedroom window and looked outside and saw the house engulfed in flames," witness Michelle Boyd said.
"I ran into my parents room, as myself and my children are visiting, and told them to call the fire brigade as no one was there.
"Within five to 10 minutes they arrived, but the house was well alight."
The derelict building was engulfed in flames when crews got to the scene.
Seven fire crews and a special ladder unit worked through the night to ensure the fire did not spread to neighbouring properties.
The blaze was extinguished by 4am and handed to police for further investigation.
According to a NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman the structural integrity of the building is very unstable after fire gutted the property and clean-up crews are expecting a partial collapse on Tuesday. There is also the possibility of asbestos inside the structure.
