POLICE have charged the owner of dogs that allegedly mauled a mechanic who later had to have his arm amputated.

The 53-year-old man was arrested by police in Coonamble on Wednesday morning after Brendan Clark lost his arm in the dog attack on June 21.
The 43-year-old mechanic was working on a Coonamble property about 11am when he was set upon by two large dogs, that he's labelled "mongrels" bred for pig hunting.
The dogs mauled Mr Clark in a prolonged attack before the dogs' owner discovered the injured mechanic in the yard.
Four dogs were removed from the property by the owner, police said, and Mr Clark suffered serious injuries to his arms along with his face and shoulders. He was rushed to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle where his right arm was amputated.
Investigators charged the 53-year-old dog owner with four offences including being the owner of a menacing dog that does not comply with section 51 or 56; failing to comply with menacing dog control requirements; hindering an investigation of a serious indictable offence; and grievous bodily harm by a negligent act.
The man was granted conditional bail to front Coonamble Local Court on July 16.
Mr Clark told ACM that he was working at the property but did not notice the dogs on the property until he went to get something from the shed.
"He launched at me and got a good grab at my shoulder. And as I went to reach around to try to rip him off, that's when the other one got the other arm, and I realised, 'You're in trouble boy'," Mr Clark said.
