The market day, to run 9am to 4pm at The Station in Newcastle's East End, has been organised by the Sydney Vegan Market.
The organisers are planning on running the market bi-monthly, scheduled for the first Sunday of every second month.
The Sydney Vegan Market runs once a month (third Sunday), with more than 130 vegan stalls, entertainment, free yoga, pilates and children's mindfulness sessions at The Entertainment Quarter at Moore Park.
Dogs are welcome at the Sydney market, and they will be welcome at the Newcastle Vegan Market.
In February the Sydney Vegan Market, which is operated by Vegan NSW, asked followers where they wanted a new market and the strongest response came from Newcastle.
Vegan NSW is a 36-year-old organisation that supports the vegan movement and aims to create vegans and sustain vegans.
Alongside the stalls and sweet sounds from local musicians, the plans call for the Newcastle market to host a free education space called TENT Talks. Modelled off the famous Ted Talk style, TENT Talks create a platform for business owners, activists, experts and community figures to speak on their passions, ideas, journeys and hopes for the future.
The Newcastle market will be a "single use plastic free event" and all service by stallholders ware must be compostable.
The information note on the application to become a stall holder states, "your entire business model must be 100% vegan/plant based/cruelty free - if you sell animal products at other markets you will not be accepted into NVM so please do not apply".
Another question on the stall holder application asks if ever sell or use ingredients that include eggs, dairy, honey, fish/oyster sauce, meat, fur, beeswax, wool, silk, or animal testing, along with a statement that "this market is for businesses that never ever use animal products, even when not at a vegan market".
Volunteers and stall holders are being sought. The market operators can be contacted at newcastleveganmarket.org.
