Emergency services were called to a house on Newcastle Street about 5.30am after concerns were raised for the welfare of the occupants. Once inside police found the body of a woman, 75.
Shortly after, police were also alerted to a concern for welfare at Stockton Beach. On arrival at the scene they found the body of a man, 76, in the surf. His body has since been recovered.
Policed have confirmed the two elderly residents were husband and wife.
"Newcastle City detectives have commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding their deaths," a police statement said
"Police will be reviewing the medical histories of the husband and wife.
"Initial inquiries suggest no third parties are being sought.
"Detectives will await the outcome of post mortem examinations to determine the direction of further inquiries."
Detectives have established two crime scenes, which are being examined by specialist forensic officers.
Police have roped off parts of Newcastle Street at the intersection of Clyde Street. Parts of the beach, near a local cafe, are also cordoned off as police try to piece together what happened overnight. Teams utilised a drone to comb the beach for clues.
Police will provide an update to the media during a brief press conference on Friday.
