The Jets will have an intra-club trial with their youth squad at Ray Watt Oval from 10am in what is their first competitive situation this pre-season.
Newcastle returned to full training just last week, after a week of testing, and play NPL leaders Edgeworth on July 27 in preparation for their FFA Cup away clash with Melbourne Victory on August 7.
Former Mariner Millar and ex-Wanderer Fitzgerald are the new additions to coach Ernie Merrick's squad, along with Panamanian international Abdiel Arroyo, who arrives next month.
Zane said Millar and Fitzgerald had hit the ground running and would feature in the friendly on Wednesday.
"They have really good attitudes and are training the house down," Zane said.
"Both of them want to prove they are a strong additions to the squad and they have been training like the first A-League game is just around the corner.
"Everyone knows those guys are going to really contribute and they are going to add some mobility in the front third. Even though Matt's a fullback, he offers a lot in the front third with his mobility getting forward. And Nick has been around the A-League for a while and is a really good addition."
Veteran centre-backs Nigel Boogaard and Nikolai Topor-Stanley are easing into the pre-season because of surgery and injury respectively and won't feature in the trial, while back-up goalkeeper Lewis Italiano is playing in Western Australia and Joey Champness is overseas chasing his music ambitions.
Zane said the rest of the squad would get game time but the likes of Jason Hoffman, Johnny Koutroumbis and Fitzgerald would be managed. Hoffman is on the comeback from ankle surgery, Koutroumbris has lower back stiffness and Fitzgerald is recovering from a cold.
"The boys have come in way ahead of where we could have expected," he said of their fitness.
"I guess since Ernie's been here they've turned back up to training in better shape for each of the three seasons and this year is no exception.
"They've taken it to another level. We've got players who are in really good shape already and even though it's only the third week of training, they are definitely ready for a game.
"It's a good time for us to get our first game and not risk any injuries.
"It's a good chance for us to get a hit-out because the youth boys are in full flight in the NPL season so their levels in terms of condition are a little bit higher than where we are at, so I think it's an ideal game to start the pre-season."
Maki Petratos, the brother of Jets star Dimi Petratos, will also feature in the main squad. He has earned a scholarship A-League deal with standout performances for the youth team.
