IF people are yet to be convinced of the need for the Me Too movement, read Layla Smith's story ('It needs to stop', Newcastle Herald, 16/7). It is not funny, no one is flattered, nor is it encouraged or wanted. It is shameful, appalling behaviour by men who believe they have the right to say and do what they like to women. Layla, we feel for you, so many of us have been through this. All we want is to be treated respectfully by all.

VERY disappointed to witness the Reserve Bar's departure ('Last drinks called in another city closure', Herald, 17/7); a victim, it appears, of the NSW government and council's local small business killer strategies. I believe it was one of the more innovative and brave emergent intimate alcohol outlets in Newcastle that bucked the big booze barn business model predicated on profits derived from maximising the dangerous over-supply of booze to Newcastle's thirsty drinkers until 3am and later into the morning.

WITH the number of apartments springing up over the city, City of Newcastle is set for a windfall in rates. Should the apartment strata use private contractors for garbage collection, the council will still charge owners a domestic waste management service fee when they in fact provide no service. The apartment owners are paying twice; once in their strata levies and again to the council. In my own case I pay the council $380 per year for nothing.

WELL said, Dave Fothergill (Letters, 17/7). Cameron Smith can play forever, however his career will always be tarnished for many reasons in my opinion; the Alex McKinnon incident and the Storm's cheating and rorting of the salary cap for years are obvious standouts. As I've stated previously, Smith is one of the main reasons why my two boys play rugby union.

THANK you so much John Church (Letters, 15/7) for your sheer guts and determination in responding to Newcastle's deputy lord mayor Declan Clausen (Letters, 15/7). In life it is often easier to go along with the crowd when you are in the minority, but Cr Church keeps challenging the status quo ('Why I will vote against the council budget', Herald, 24/6) on behalf of his constituents and that is not an easy job.
