I wouldn't imagine that the substandard building products used in our construction industry ('States strike deal on building standards', Newcastle Herald 19/7) are imported from China.

LABOR were saying before the election what a mess the Coalition was ('Morrison a less popular salesman than Turnbull, says Shorten', Guardian 25/8/18). Now look at them. The mess and utter mess they're in shows they learned nothing from losing. Their eyes and ears are painted on. If they don't wake up, it'll be eight years in opposition. Only time will tell.

BRAD Hill (Short Takes, 19/7), God is indeed real and I live with her at home which is our heaven. Hell is not too bad as I only have to endure it for 40 hours a week (minimum). My church is the ocean, albeit I haven't been attending of late. It's been ghastly freezing.

IN response to Scott Hillard (Letters, 17/7), I don't believe that I can be assured that the rich of our country are paying taxes from what I have read before. Most of them are apparently using laws to avoid paying tax by using the services of clever accountants ('Dobbers hit dodgers: tax office gets record 60,000 tip offs', Newcastle Herald 20/6). Also, the rich companies operating in this country reportedly don't pay tax either. The tax burden seems to fall to high and middle-income earners who simply cannot minimise their taxes. It also has been reported that the president of the US has not paid any tax for many years, but how would anyone know? He refuses to release his tax returns and he is certainly rich.

WHEN one developer calls the CBD a 'bloody war zone' and the other 'a dead horse' with 60 empty shops ('CBD will rise like 'phoenix', Newcastle Herald 18/7) surely we've got to feel that something has gone wrong. I believe Revitalising Newcastle has failed in its attempt to revive the city centre. The CBD is fast becoming a residential area for the rich - out of reach of many - that forces people to the mega-malls where they can get free parking and shop easily. I feel for the few traders still trying to make a living in Hunter Street.

HERE in Newcastle there is very poor coverage of the Tour de France on radio, paper and TV. All the other sports receive a lot of play time. This is the biggest bike race in the world, once a year millions of spectators pack the roads every day to cheer on the best riders in the world. Very disappointed.

THERE are many things that are not provable, but if the source of all evil is religion I believe this can be tested. There should be no evil people in prison without religious affiliation. This, I think, is unlikely.

WELL said, Rod Woodhouse (Short Takes, 19/7). To all the pill poppers, good luck. You can't fix stupid.
