THE University of Newcastle has hosted the city's first virtual reality concert, providing viewers with insight into how society may experience live music in the future.

UON's School of Creative Industries held a school holidays workshop this week for about 20 students from years five to eight, which involved them creating a piece of music called Rhythmic Shapes with associate lecturer and conservatorium coordinator Adam Manning over two days.
They performed the piece at the Newcastle Conservatorium of Music on Friday, gathered around a 360 degree camera set up in the middle of the group.
The audience watched the concert from another room via YouTube, after placing their smartphones into headsets, which replicated being immersed in the middle of the performance.
Mr Manning said the act of viewing was evolving.
"Our work... is a genuine attempt to construct a piece of music which caters for virtual and digital viewers, taking into consideration that we're building a new strategy for an online audience whilst implementing traditional techniques."
