Lieutenant Hines' son Shane and the Wangi Wangi RSL Sub-Branch held the service on Sunday at the memorial outside the RSL Club, where a commemorative plaque for Lieutenant Hines has been installed.
He was the commander of 3 Platoon, "A" Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment.
Of the estimated 100 attendees, 13 were from his platoon and had travelled from as far away as New Zealand and North Queensland.
This included Alf Lamb, who welcomed guests to the service. Lieutenant Hines' widow Norma said the day was "overwhelming" and it was "wonderful" to see so many people.
She said the number of guests who travelled "shows the respect for Peter and the family and for the platoon".
Shane Hines said he felt pride and the service meant "everything" to him.
