A NIGHT of contemporary dance featuring new works from some of Australia's top choreographers will be held at the Newcastle Art Gallery next month.

Presented byCatapult, PROPEL will have audiences traverse through the gallery, viewing new works by Australia's finest professional choreographers and performers.

It will be held on Friday, September 27 at 8pm.

Choreographers and performers include Australian Dance Award recipient Kristina Chan, visual artist Lottie Consalvo, choreographer Gabrielle Nankivell and Pedro Grieg, photographer with Sydney Dance Company.

Other performers include 2019 Helpmann Award winner Tara Samaya, Pippa Samaya and Catapult Dance Company members Skip Willcox, Alexandra Ford, Allie Graham, Nicholas Jachno and Zackari Watt (composer).

Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub is a professional contemporary dance, choreographic, and multi-disciplinary arts organisation for professional choreographers and dance artists, emerging artists, young people and the community.

Its program includes:

  • Catapult Company, Newcastle's professional dance company;
  • PROPEL, achoreographic residency program;
  • International commissions and performances, and
  • The Flipside Project, a youth dance initiative awarded an Australian Dance Award for outstanding achievement in youth dance.

Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub conducts weekly classes, masterclasses, schools' workshops and professional development for teachers.

The next masterclasses will be held on September 1, with Kristina Chan and October 6, with Adam Blanch.

Chan and Blanch are two of Australia's finest choreographers and performers.

They will teach contemporary technique, repertoire and choreography process.

Classes are from 10am to 2pm, for dancers aged14+ years at intermediate to advanced level.

Catapult will also hold an open studio on September 6 (with Kristina Chan) and October 18 (with Adam Blanch).

Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub, in Hunter Street, Newcastle West, also offers weekly drop-in classes, adult contemporary classes, pre-professional contemporary and ballet open classes with professional dancers and guest artists, children's contemporary classes and yoga classes for all.
