It's shaping up just as good this weekend with mostly sunny weather and light winds offering another opportunity to get out wide, if that's your fancy, or just pick your spot in close and savour the sunshine.
"Last weekend there was some really nice reds caught from Seal Rocks down to Anna Bay," Brent "Hammer" Hancock, from Tackle World Port Stephens, said.
"All the shallow reefs seem to be holding snapper.
"I went for a run last weekend to chase a feed and got two 70cm reds in consecutive casts."
This time of year the snapper move in to the shallows and in the wake of the big swell that had been running, it was always going to be a chance.
"This weekend will be sensational too," Hammer said.
"We're on the good side of the moon phase and the forecast is looking absolutely amazing."
Brandon Thompson got some really nice snapper out around Broughton, while Brad from Pacific Blue Charters, fishing on his aptly named boat Doctor Hook, got some really good fish on charter just south of Broughton.
Out on the Shelf Josh Sweeney, fishing on Glaucus, got an absolute cracker of a yellowfin which looked to weigh upwards of 70kg.
"It's definitely the weekend to go out and have a search," Hammer said.
"The guys on Glaucus reportedly saw a lot of fish.
"Looking at the water, its a long way out but easy to get there this weekend with the weather.
"There's a light southerly Saturday and bugger all Sunday."
Bream to go
Stacks of bream throughout local estuaries at the moment.
Baits and or soflt plastics like your Gulp 2-inch shrimps or crabbies on light leaders have been doing the job, with some feeling the bigger fish are biting on the plastics.
"The shortcut wall at Tea Gardens is a great spot this time of year if you've got a boat," Hammer said.
"These warmer days will attract the flatties to the shallows too. We've seen a couple of good jew caught this week and of course the luderick are still there."
Plenty of drummer of the ocean rocks, from Boulder Bay down to Boat Harbour.
"Terry Hunt has been smacking into them, getting pigs up to 3kg," Hammer said.
"There's also luderick and bream in the washes as well.
'A few tailor turning up on the beaches and salmon are starting to appear too."
Lake on fire
Teralba Lakesiders Fishing Club had a strong weigh-in for their monthly comp last weekend with two lake jew over a metre presented, as well as reports one member lost a 20kg mulloway off the beach.
"Member Craig won the day with a 17.8kg bag of fish over six species topped off with one of those big jew," club president John Thoroughgood reported.
"Some big tailor were produced and good snapper including one 62cm from the lake.
"There was also a big pearl perch caught outside.
"A few free beers, barbie and prawns topped off a great afternoon by the creek."
Teralba Lakesiders Fishing Club is based at Teralba Bowling Club and runs raffles every Friday night with tickets are on sale from 5.30pm.
Weigh-ins are held monthly and new members are always welcome.
"We've got 60 members now and it's really family friendly," John said.
"We've put in place processes to protect our fish stocks, like reducing the number of fish per bag limit and doing more catch and release, and we're working on educating our members about fishing and it's really been embraced."
The club is hosting a massive junior tournament in December, supported by local fishing and sporting identity Michael Guest, with lots of prizes.
"We're planning on having 40 teams involved and the focus will be not only on fishing and fun, but educating kids coming through about sustainability," John said.
"We don't want to rake the lake and our guys are pretty good that way. I'm the ultimate conserver because I never catch anything."
Teralba Park Bowling Club is one of the few clubs in Australia, perhaps, where you can pull your boat up at the jetty.
"It's seven feet from there to the weigh-in and from there another seven feet to the bar," John observed.
"These are user-friendly dimensions after a day on the water."
Sunnyside up
Sunnyside Fishing Club held its monthly comp last weekend, and there were some good fish caught.
Members battled a bit of wind up Nelson Bay way but still managed to nab some nice luderick.
Declan Hawkins Power and Craig Handyside fished off Swansea on Sunday and bagged morwong, groper and snapper.
