Cr Clausen added his voice to Labor condemnation of Cr Robinson after the retired jockey compared a female councillor with "Jessie the elephant" during a debate in the council chamber on Tuesday night.
Cr Robinson has repeatedly used a provocative moniker for Cr Clausen in the chamber and added an overtly sexual connotation to the term in a phone interview with the Newcastle Herald on Wednesday.
The term Cr Robinson uses is not a common pejorative for homosexuals, but Cr Clausen said he was being targeted because of his sexuality.
"I'm proud to be the openly gay deputy lord mayor of a community that had the highest yes vote of any non-capital city in Australia," Cr Clausen said, referring to the same-sex marriage referendum in 2017.
"The Newcastle I know is a welcoming and increasingly diverse community.
"The fact Cr Robinson's fellow independent councillors don't call him out on his relentless sexism and homophobia is appalling."
Cr Clausen, who is part of the council's Labor majority, said Cr Robinson was "unfit to serve on council and should resign" or be cut from the independents' ticket at next year's council election.
When asked on Thursday if he had a problem with homosexuals, Cr Robinson said via email: "I have no problem with women hencing [sic] the sexist story ... I have problems with ... people who plonk themselves on boards then pay themselves.
"I have no problems with p--fs. I have one work for me and I'm very good friends with three p--fs who I'm proud to say they are my friends.
"I have serious problems with people who want to spend $40k or $60k of ratepayers money on painting rainbow coloured crossings on concrete."
Cr Robinson earlier attracted criticism from lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes and fellow Labor councillor Carol Duncan after he said during a debate on Tuesday that "some people have got more hide than Jessie the elephant and look like that".
Cr Robinson had criticised Cr Nelmes for accepting $50,000 to sit on the Newcastle Airport board.
In 2015, he was the subject of an internal investigation after referring to then councillor Stephanie Posniak as "beefcake" in a council meeting.
