Magic vice-president Tony Temelkovski said the high quality of candidates meant the decision was not an easy one but Richards came out ahead.
The Newcastle Herald understands Cooks Hill coach Graham Law, Jim Cresnar, former Magic premiership winner Robert Virgili and Charlestown's David Tanchevski were among those the club spoke to about the position.
Richards has been assistant coach to Zadkovich since the start of last season. Before that, he was head coach at Lake Macquarie and Adamstown in the Northern NSW NPL and Maitland in the second division.
It was announced last month that Zadkovich would pursue coaching opportunities outside the competition next season, ending a three-year stint in charge at Magic.
The former Jets captain and Socceroo guided them to the NNSW NPL championship and the FFA Cup round of 16 last season. They sit third this season and remain in contention for the premiership.
Broadmeadow face sixth-placed Lambton Jaffas on Saturday at Edden Oval in a crucial round 20 match.
