Magic goalkeeper Paul Bitz denied Jaffas striker Braedyn Crowley from the spot in the 51st minute after Anthony Wood was fouled, but the home side went ahead in the 67th when Josh Sutton scored from a goalmouth scramble.
Crowley made up for the miss to cement the win in the 91st minute, finishing a runaway counterattack.
Broadmeadow's James Virgili had a penalty chance in the dying stages but Brad Swancott dived the right way to keep a clean sheet.
The result lifted Lambton a spot to fifth on 30 points and dropped Magic from third to fourth on 32. The Jaffas have a game in hand on Broadmeadow and two on leaders Edgeworth, who have 35 points.
Magic stayed within reach of Edgeworth after the Eagles' shock loss to Valentine on Sunday, but Richards knows Broadmeadow cannot afford another loss.
"I know the premiership is still thereabouts but it's really tough now, even for top four," Richards said. "If you slip up two weeks in a row, you're in trouble I think."
Richards said Magic paid the price for not converting their opportunities.
"In games like that, when you're playing against good teams, you have to take your chances when they come up," he said.
"They got a little bit fortunate with their goal, a goalmouth scramble, but they were good enough to take it and then you've got to chase it down from there.
"[Jaffas] worked really hard and Braedyn is their danger player, and he pops up in the 91st minute to make sure of it."
Matt Hoole and Hayden Seaton are also set to miss Magic's next match, against Hamilton, on yellow card accumulation.
Adamstown and the Jets Youth had a 1-1 draw in Saturday's other round 20 game.
Maki Petratos put the Jets ahead before Mat Keogh equalised.
