Some of Australia's best young hockey players have descended on Newcastle for the School Sport Australia 16 Years and Under Hockey Championships this week.

Both the girls and boys tournaments are being held at Newcastle International Hockey Centre in Broadmeadow until Saturday.
At the end of the second day on Monday, NSW State sat in third position on the ladder of the boys competition with NSW Blue running mid-table.
The two sides clashed on Monday morning with NSW State finishing commanding 7-0 winners.
Newcastle hockey players Izaac Smith, of Macquarie College, and Ryan Woolnough, of Merewether High School, are playing for NSW Blue.
In the girls competition, both NSW teams got off to a mixed start in the first couple of games.
However the sides played each other on Monday afternoon and NSW State won 6-0, propelling the side into second position. NSW Blue were seventh heading into Tuesday's matches.
Merewether High School's Makenzi Harvey is part of the NSW State side while Tomaree High School's Grace Baxter is in NSW Blue.
The tournaments break for a rest day on Wednesday.
