HOW does one dispose of a living human being? The cant by the non-protesting bishop ('Bishop backs abortion bill', Newcastle Herald 7/8) makes one very sad, that a minister of religion is comfortable in disposing of a human being whilst in the womb. In Eternity God shall listen to the cries of the disposed.

PETER Sansom (Letters, 9/8), I'm pleased that you had a wonderful time at the birth of your son, but you are missing the point. We live in a free country where we should be able to do what we need to do for our own body and circumstances. An enormous amount of human conflict is caused by other humans insisting their moral or religious beliefs are the right ones.

GOOD to hear from Steve Barnett (Letters, 7/8). I couldn't let his letter go through to the keeper. I miss him playing off the front foot, dispatching left-armers effortlessly over the pickets. I hope Miss Universe is well.

TO Desmond Bellamy (Short Takes, 8/8), growing up did you never have meat and three veg for dinner? Unfortunately we are at the top of the food chain and if I want a steak I'm going to eat a god-damned steak.

YET again, a mass shooting in a "gun-free" zone. Despite Texas' gun laws, the Cielo Vista mall where the El Paso massacre took place does not allow people to carry guns. Widespread liberalisation of gun laws in the US, with the number of states permitting concealed carry growing from 13 to over 40, has coincided with US Department of Justice figures showing the murder rate dropped from its peak of about 10 per 100,000 in the 1990s to around 4.5 per 100,000 in recent years. According to Pew Research Centre, violent crime in the USA is at the lowest levels since the 1990s. With deranged murderers and terrorists repeatedly choosing places where nobody can shoot back, surely we should eliminate those targets?

WHEN will America wake up and stop the easy access to guns and ammunition? There are too many innocent men, women, children and babies being slaughtered every year. Something has to be done now. Surely somebody can do something.

CRICKET: loathe it or love it, but what are the cricket boards of Australia and England thinking by adding cheap plastic looking numbers to the backs of the players shirts? The only light relief is the number sixty-six assigned to England captain Joe Root.

RAY Dinneen (Letters, 30/7), you are right regarding one aspect in your letter. You had no idea what the police were doing on that side of Newcastle Road, or for that matter what they were about to do on the day you saw them. While police should set a good example to all, comments about police officers who risk their lives daily during each shift is rather boring and often reflects in some people, not necessarily Mr Dinneen, a deep-seated dislike of authority.
