POLICE have arrested and charged a man over break-in and stealing offences after a month-long manhunt.

On July 7 police were called to a break and enter in Turnbull Street, Merewether. The residents left their home to walk their dogs and on their return found a male walking out of their main bedroom. The man ran from the premises and was confronted by one of the occupants in their driveway. A struggle took place, however the offender fought free and made his escape. The man's backpack was retained by the resident and handed over to police. Officers searched the area but could not locate the offender.
Newcastle detectives commenced an investigation and identified a 31-year-old man who was on parole as a possible suspect. This information was provided to Community Corrections and his parole was subsequently revoked with a revocation of parole warrant issued.
Then on July 22 a wallet was stolen from a Hyundai van parked on Fowler Street, Hamilton South. A credit card from the wallet was fraudulently used on seven occasions. Using CCTV police said they identified the same 31-year-old man as the break and enter case.
After a month-long manhunt, a breakthrough came on Thursday when information was received regarding the alleged offender's whereabouts.
About 2pm officers attached the the Police Transport Command attended an address in Fowler Street, Hamilton South. Police located the male inside a unit where he was arrested and taken to Newcastle police station. He was charged with 11 offences and the revocation of parole warrant. Bail was refused by police and he will appear at Newcastle Local Court on Friday.
