About 12.20am on Friday police attempted to stop a white Holden Barina on Newcastle Road, Lambton, after police spotted passengers in the vehicle allegedly not wearing seatbelts.
Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but a pursuit began.
Police said the vehicle travelled at speeds of 90 kilometres per hour through the suburban streets of Jesmond and Wallsend, driving in "a manner dangerous with passengers in the car throwing objects at the pursuing police vehicle".
Whilst on Minmi Road, Wallsend the vehicle allegedly increased its speed to 110 kilometres and the pursuit was terminated due to safety.
A short time later police received information that the vehicle had stopped in Shortland Close, Maryland and the occupants had fled. Police, including the dog squad, attended and a perimeter was established.
Police dog Ulrich and his handler commenced a track locating the male driver attempting to hide in the front yard of a premises in Prospero Street. He was searched and police seized a knife, cloth manipulated for use as a face mask and a small amount of the prohibited drug 'ice'. The male was arrested without incident and taken to Waratah police station.
At the police station the 36-year-old man supplied a false name and after his identity was confirmed via fingerprints, it was established he was currently on parole until 2021, having only been released from custody two weeks prior.
The male was charged with four offences including police pursuit- drive recklessly (Skye's law), learner driver not accompanied by licensed driver, custody of knife in a public place and possession of a prohibited drug. He was refused bail and was set to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Friday.
