ONCE again the pious POTUS cites mental health as the cause of these latest atrocities, seemingly dismissing the continued denial that the shootings had nothing to do with the free availability of high-powered weapons by a society obsessed with a second amendment enshrined in a constitution written in generations past.

NIGHT night, Knights ('Six and out', Newcastle Herald 12/8).

WHAT a great and impartial letter, Diana Taaffe (Letters, 8/8). As a 54-year-old male with good morals and values, I find it quite hard to deal with. I was at a supermarket a while back and was having trouble with the self serve (as we all do) and the younger assistant was also having trouble with it. I jokingly said "don't worry, the customer is always right until they're proved wrong" and as I was saying it I touched her on the shoulder. She gave me a stern "don't touch me" warning. I was shocked, as I've never had to encounter that before. Pardon the pun, but I think the world is getting out of hand.

UPON reading about these topics in the Herald recently, solutions occurred to me: dredge deeper into the Swansea channel to lower the water level and avoid the need to raise the bridge('Bridging gap as sea rises', Newcastle Herald 8/8); and send the cyclists to to purchase the very wide tyres available so they won't fit down the cracks in the tram tracks. Problems solved, thank you.

MEMO to Liberal MP Andrew Hastie ('Liberal MP's China views divide government', Newcastle Herald 10/8) : better to remain silent and look a fool, than open your mouth and remove all doubt.

ROBERT Lutton (Short Takes, 12/8) not everyone believes what you do. Women should have the right to their own body and no take instructions off people like you.
Ken Stead, Lambton
IT was a $10,300 fraud motivated not for personal gain built to increase and maintain his popularity ('Former mayor Antoniolli avoids jail term for fraud', Newcastle Herald 10/8). Would any similar concessions on sentencing apply to someone who stole this amount over time due to hunger, or just to stay alive? One would hope so.

"I'M on fire! I'm on fire!" The screams came just as I turned off the shower taps. A wild, bumping dash to the kitchen. We faced each other, she in her gown with blackened sleeves and me in my birthday suit, and she said to me, "Why are you standing there like that? You're dripping on my floor."

ARE we a dumb or clever mob? Controversy and debate have partly yielded a precipitous descent of the humanitarian belief in a higher power. The "Reproduction Health Care Reform Bill 2019" seems to contradict itself. "Reproduce health care reform", who for? And as for "care", who cares?
