Supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths have began construction on shopping centres in two fast-growing areas of Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley, projecting the plazas will be complete by mid-2020.

Both Coles and Woolworths hosted ceremonial turning of the sod events on Tuesday to mark the beginning of construction at Huntlee and Cameron Park respectively.
Woolworths is building a shopping centre on George Booth Drive in Cameron Park after purchasing the land for the development almost 10 years ago. The company said the plaza would include a supermarket, BWS, and 22 specialty stores.
Woolworths regional development manager Andrew Asvestas described the area as "one of the fastest growing suburbs in Lake Macquarie". According to Census figures, the relatively young residential area grew by 4,200 people between 2006 and 2016 to a population of around 8,000.
Coles is building a shopping centre in the massive housing development of Huntlee, positioned half-a-kilometre from Branxton. The estate is expected to grow to a population of 20,000 people over the next 20 years. The new suburb is currently home to more than 1000 people, after the developer LWP began selling residential blocks in 2013.
"Coles are doing stage one of the town centre, which includes the supermarket, Liquorland and specialty stores. That will be finished in the middle of next year," Huntlee project director Stephen Thompson said.
