SOME media outlets, it would seem, have learned nothing from the mistakes and dangerous actions taken by the media in the Lindt siege. The frenzy that was exhibited in the Sydney incident on Tuesday ('Man arrested after CBD stabbing', Newcastle Herald 14/8) was nothing short of despicable, not helpful in the least, at such an early stage after the event, meant that adrenalin was running high amid conflicting stories.

NEWCASTLE Knights supporters are working class people who over the years have endured many setbacks, but due to their great industrial and trade union backgrounds have remained loyal to our sporting representatives. During the good times and bad times there will always be the knockers, but be assured the supporters of the Knights will remain loyal. Most clubs in the NRL would envy the Newcastle support base, and also those talented junior footballers. Just look at our ambassadors, the Johns boys and the players from that grand final team.

IF I wasn't already cranky with Nathan Brown's inability to get the best out of the Knights, I am now. Who does he think he is, saying he knows why we've lost so many close games "but that's not for the public" to know? ('Please explain', Herald 13/8). I believe we who pay for memberships, merchandise, match day seats etc have a right to know. Time to pack your bags, Mr Brown. You've had enough time and have spent enough money to improve the performance, and you have failed.

I SEE Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus have broken up ('Liam Hemsworth is 'really sad' following split from Miley Cyrus', Nine 14/8). It's no doubt leaving Miley's dad Billy Ray with an achy-breaky heart.

THE Maritime Museum collection is a large and important expression of Newcastle's maritime, shipbuilding and ship repair history ('More time for museum', Herald 14/8). On the former dockyard site, there is a large and important building - the former machine shop. It was re-clad and re-roofed a few years ago. If it was made available it would be an excellent repository for the collection. Access could be available via a floating pontoon ferry wharf and the current Stockton ferry could be re-routed to service it. Novocastrians would also again have access to the Dyke Point bicentennial gardens.

I GET my Newcastle Herald delivered every morning, and the first page I read is the Obits to make sure my name isn't there. Next I read the comments page to make sure my name is there, but the page that has got me intrigued is the John Lewis page. I love a glass of merlot a couple of days a week, but I also like a sémillon sauvignon blanc on occasions. The difference is that mine are $15-$20, and I'm not too sure about this middle pallet or the back pallet to be truthful, whereas John is sampling wines worth $75-$200. I wonder if one day he could drop his price tag and give us ordinary folk a bit of a review of wines we mere mortals can afford.
