Cowburn, who was not re-signed by the Jets after the 2018-19 A-League campaign, has proven a key mid-season addition for the Magpies.
The 24-year-old committed to the club this week to return in 2020, when Maitland hope to be defending the NNSW NPL premiership.
"Nick's back on board and we've got about 80 per cent of the squad re-signed. We've just got to work through the last few," coach Mick Bolch said. "Nick's really enjoying his football and he re-signed straight away, so that was good."
Maitland lead by two points heading into their final round clash with the Jets Youth at Cooks Square Park on Sunday. Only four-time defending premiers Edgeworth, who have a superior goal difference and are away to a desperate Lambton Jaffas on Sunday, can catch the Magpies.
If successful, Maitland will be NNSW top-division premiers for the first time - five years after they secured promotion following 12 seasons in the second tier.
Bolch said only Matt Thompson (lower back) was in doubt for the game.
"It's all systems go," he said. "There's plenty of experienced boys there and the young ones are buzzing, so it's just about keeping the focus on the job at hand.
"I'm sure if they all turn up and do their jobs, they'll get their rewards."
Edgeworth are safely in the top four and are backing up from a 5-1 loss to the Jets in the FFA Cup round of 16 on Wednesday night at Jack McLaughlan Oval.
Keanu Moore (groin) and Dylan Holz (ribs) missed the match through injury, while goalscorer Daniel McBreen came off at halftime after aggravating his calf problem.
