Fullerton Cove Residents Action Group's Lindsay Clout said Mr Kean asked Shadow Environment Minister, Port Stephens MP Kate Washington, if there were "any other issues I should look at" while visiting on Sunday.
Six residents met with Mr Kean and Ms Washington for an hour at Salt Ash.
"It was a positive meeting," Mr Clout said.
"He made a commitment he will come back and follow up on a few things.
"He was particularly surprised at some things he heard in regards to inaction. I'm hopeful we might get some more state government support."
Residents spoke about rezoning to improve property values; work not moving fast enough on bases; the absence of a timeline for dealing with the problem off bases; and their mental health.
Mr Clout said he suggested Mr Kean look at the state government's submission to the inquiry into the management of PFAS contamination, which was "quite a boost... but there was no follow up".
