The 19-year-old, who sustained minor injuries to his arm, wrist and knee when struck in a hit-and-run accident while cycling with Australian teammates in Spain, finished seven seconds behind Portugal's Ricardo Batista in the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final junior men's race in Lausanne on Friday night (AEST).
"It's fantastic," Redmond, who is the son of Triple M Newcastle breakfast presenter Tanya Wilks, told ITU media.
"It's a tough course. On the bike we all came together and it was pretty rough.
"There was a lot of screaming, swearing and yelling going on, but we all got through it.
"It all came down to the run.
"The first lap was really easy, but I think I made my surge a bit early, but I got excited, but I'm very happy with how I ended up in second.
"It's been a long time coming. I've visualised this race for years and years.
"I've always wanted to get a medal at junior worlds, for seven years or so.
"To finally pull it off is a great feeling."
After the opening swim leg, Redmond was part of a large chasing pack on the bike alongside countrymen Oscar Dart and Josh Ferris.
The Australians reeled in the leaders to put themselves in position to challenge heading out on the run.
With the field beginning to break up midway through the run, Batista took his chance to make a break.
Redmond gave chase all the way to the finish line, clocking 55 minutes and 12 seconds, but he was unable to catch Batista.
On Saturday night (AEST), Newcastle's Aaron Royle was the best performed Australian in the elite category, finishing 16th in the men's standings.
