The man, who was in a relationship with the girl's mother, was represented by solicitor Kate Maher when he appeared in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, negligent driving occasioning death and negligent driving causing grievous bodily harm.
He did not enter any pleas and the matter was adjourned for 12 weeks so the brief of evidence could be served, an extended adjournment due to the "complex" nature of the investigation. Police say the man was driving a Holden Statesman that lost control and hit a power pole in McCaffrey Drive at New Lambton Heights about 12.48pm on August 13. The girl was treated at the scene by an off-duty nurse and paramedics before being taken to John Hunter Children's Hospital, where she died.
