Officers were called to a Doyles Creek Road property at Doyles Creek about 4pm on Thursday after a concern for welfare was reported to authorities.
They found a man and woman, 48 and 49, inside the property.
Both had suffered gun shot wounds, police said.
A crime scene was established and forensic specialists have examined the scene.
"Whilst officers from Hunter Valley Police District continue with inquiries into the incident, at this stage it is being treated as a murder suicide," police said in a statement.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
