October is breast cancer awareness month and Wests are giving diners the chance to "Go Pink" to raise money for the foundation. Together with Red Funnel, M&J Chickens, Rarity Wholesale, Newcastle Seafood Wholesalers, Reward Hospitality and Top Cut, Wests has pledged to donate $5 from every "pink burger" sold this month to Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation.
All you have to do is order any burger at West Mayfield, Wests City, Wests New Lambton, Wests Cardiff or Wests Nelson Bay and, for no additional cost, ask to "Go Pink" and a pink burger bun will be used.
Also, Wests New Lambton will host the 13th annual Breast Care Fundraiser Breakfast on October 17, 7.30am to 9am. The event has raised more than $233,000 to date to provide education and training for our region's specialist breast care nurses. This year's event will feature guest speakers Tracey Dunn, Dr Stephen Cox, Dr Hiren Mandaliya and Helen Moore. Tickets at trybooking.com.
Wests aren't the only ones thinking pink this month.
Crowne Plaza Hunter Valley is hosting "Bubbly Breakfast goes back to the 80s" on Sunday, October 27, 8.30am to 11.30am. Now in its 14th year, Bubbly Breakfast will feature a hot and cold breakfast, music by The Cassettes and unlimited pink sparkling wine. All funds raised go to the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation's Memory Box Program, which creates a video message and photo shoot for family and friends of someone with terminal cancer. Tickets are on sale now.
The Grand Hotel in Newcastle is also doing its bit. Buy any $12 cocktail there this month and $2 will go to The McGrath Foundation. There will also be fundraising Friday meat raffles and donation tins throughout the pub.
BBQ For Boobs, an initiative of the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation, asks businesses to host a barbecue for their staff and colleagues. Staff are then encouraged to donate what they would normally spend on lunch. A "Super Booby BBQ Kit" is given to each business, which contains a pink apron, a chef's hat, pink balloons, pink serviettes, a tea towel and a fundraising tin. All businesses need to supply is the barbecue, sausages, sauce and bread.
There's also the annual Tea4TROG High Tea on October 27 at Mercure Charlestown which raises funds for Hunter-based TROG's cancer clinical trials research program. It will be hosted by journalist, radio broadcaster and cancer survivor Julie McCrossin along with guest speaker and consultant radiation oncologist Puma Sundaresan.
- One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, with about 600 new cases diagnosed in the Hunter Region alone each year.
