Port Stephens-Hunter police are appealing for urgent help from the public in the search for missing man Gavin McDermott.

Police said in a statement on the weekend that the 47-year-old was last seen by a neighbour on Macrae Crescent at East Maitland on October 9.
An investigation began after a family member reported Mr McDermott missing.

Family and police have serious concerned for his welfare and believe his behaviour to be out of character.
Mr McDermott is described as being of Caucasian appearance with a thin build, about 180cm tall with brown eyes and brown hair.
It is believed he could be driving his white 2008 Toyota Prado diesel station wagon with NSW registration CEQ 39Y.
