Police were called to Mordue Parade at Jesmond about 7.15am on Monday after reports a stolen car was parked in the area.

Plain-clothes officers found the Mazda 3 and removed a 21-year-old Rutherford man, who had been asleep in the driver's seat wearing gloves, from the parked car.

The man was arrested and police will allege a subsequent search found three knives, more gloves and a face mask in the man's pockets.

"Inquiries revealed the vehicle was stolen in a break and enter offence that occurred last Friday evening at Kitchener Parade, The Hill," police said.

The 21-year-old was taken to Waratah police station and charged with enter vehicle without consent, convicted person found with intent to commit indictable offence, possess knife in a public place and breaching conditional bail.

He was refused bail to face Newcastle Local Court on Monday.

Newcastle police said inquiries into the Kitchener Parade break-in are ongoing and anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
