City of Newcastle has approved plans to convert another 19th century building to apartments in the Hunter Street mall.
Developers plan to turn the 1887 heritage-listed Municipal Building on the corner of Hunter and Market streets into 28 units with ground-floor shops.
The design includes 16 apartments on the building's existing second and third floors, another 12 in a curvy roof-top addition over two levels and a roof-top terrace.
The Municipal Building is next door to the former AA Dangar Building, which will also become apartments under plans approved by the council, and across the road from Iris Capital's massive East End residential project.
The council plans to reinstate a 40km/h speed limit to the mall, build a cycleway and improve landscaping throughout the precinct to coincide with the residential redevelopments.
