The Port Authority of NSW announced last week that it was calling for ideas on how Nobbys headland could be reopened to the public.
The authority said a "maritime interpretative centre or museum" was one possible use for the site and said it had started talking to interested groups.
Museum society president Bob Cook said the three restored cottages on the site could house a display about ship wrecks and the history of Nobbys based on items from the museum collection.
The society would not lease Nobbys but could reach an agreement with a future operator to stage an exhibit.
The museum is still searching for a permanent home since folding in May 2018 with a six-figure debt and is interested in a restored Carrington Pump House and even a return to the Honeysuckle A Shed.
City of Newcastle has been storing the items in a warehouse at Carrington, but chief executive officer Jeremy Bath, concerned about a lack of progress on the issue, gave the society an ultimatum in August to resume full control of the collection or donate it to the council for display in Newcastle Museum.
The society, unhappy with the Newcastle Museum option, asked for more time, but Mr Bath said the council would relinquish its trusteeship over the collection.
Mr Cook said society members would meet on November 4 to discuss the collection's future.
"We are looking at several excellent locations, so it is very encouraging that the Port Authority of NSW is seeking a use for Nobbys headland," he said.
"We've established contact with the consultants and will make a submission for an interpretation at the site."
