Billed as the 'Airbnb for boat experiences', Sydney-based Flotespace is an online marketplace and concierge service for boat and yacht rentals.

Boata is a Sydney charter boat booking company and subsidiary of Deckee, the Newcastle-developed app for boat owners or sailors.

Deckee founder Mike McKiernan said the two companies had realised how aligned their businesses were during several months of discussions: "It made more sense for us to join forces and do something really special."

Mr McKiernan is now co-CEO of Flotespace with its founder Hugh Treseder, while Boata COO Nathan Sanderson is head of operations at Flotespace.

The acquisition will see the Boata team and charter fleet join Flotespace in a "centralised, comprehensive service" offering spanning both commercial and peer-to-peer boat bookings for any type of celebration, event or escape.

"Most people assume they need a lot of money or boating skills to enjoy a day out on the water with their friends, family or colleagues," said Hugh Treseder, Flotespace Founder and CEO.

"Flotespace is beginning to change this perception, by providing easy access to the boating lifestyle without all the costs and commitment of the traditional boat ownership model."

Due to current regulations in Australia preventing privately owned vessels from being offered as accommodation, Flotespace recently expanded internationally into the UK, and with the acquisition of Boata is now equipped to cater for the Australian boating market.
