The Wickham power pole was always going to be ripe for parody, wasn't it?
Chuffed with all the publicity over the Wickham pole, the City of Newcastle has made some alterations to the Supercars track (as you can see from this meme).
We also hear Harry and Megs paid a visit to the Wickham pole [a meme of this was doing the rounds, too].
It's apparently the first stop on the royal couple's trip to the South Pole.
Newcastle East's John Fear got in on the action. He sent us a beautiful poem about the Wickham pole.
Over to you John:
There's a power pole on the edge of the street, A long way out from where the kerb should meet. Our council has made a blunder it would seem, They forgot to tell Ausgrid of their scheme. Now don't blame council, they have a lot on their mind, With shifting to new premises and Supercars combine.
There is a good solution to this situation, If council and Ausgrid can renew communication. Ausgrid shift their pole to the middle of Foundry and Albert, Then council can make their roundabout - around it.
Horror Movie on our TV
Not that we want to draw any attention to Halloween or anything like that.
But who are we to stop the tide of American culture from swamping the land of Oz?
The Americanisation of Aussie culture has been happening for decades anyhow. We've been Hollywooded just as much as the next country.
Which is why we saw this image in a University of Newcastle animation project and immediately thought of Freddie Krueger - the ghoulish serial killer from the American horror film franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street - which first came out in 1984.
Horror movies don't seem as alluring as they once were, now the gaming world serves up daily doses of blood and gore to anyone that way inclined.
But we always did wonder why people like horror films. Psychological researchers say people are drawn to the tension, suspense, terror, shock, violence and whatnot. They love the thrill. The fear of death is in there somewhere, too.
Some viewers identify with the victims. And some identify with the killers.
Ooooh, we just got a cold shiver.
Stories we read this week about Ivan Milat just came to mind.
Sweet, Groovy Video
But let's get back to the image of the Freddy Krueger lookalike.
University of Newcastle animation students - about 50 of them - combined to create 2866 drawings in an "epic homage to Chaka Khan's Like Sugar music video".
The students captured the "sharpest dance moves of 2019" in the video.
As Chaka sang: "It's like sugar, so sweet. Good enough to eat."
To see the video, take a look at the university's Facebook page.
